More information about Hillcrest

Hillcrest is a neighborhood in the heart of San Diego near Balboa Park. Originally, Hillcrest was a chaparral covered mesa and which Indians inhabited numerous villages scattered throughout what is now San Diego County. Spanish colonization brought the first of twenty-nine California missions.

In 1870, Mary Kearney obtained a deed from the city for the land that eventually became Hillcrest. A year later two real estate developers obtained the property. George Hill, a wealthy railroad tycoon, then purchased the land from the two developers. Soon after this in 1910 development started and the area was built out by 1920. During the 1920s and 1930s Hillcrest was considered a suburban shopping area for downtown San Diego.

Today, Hillcrest is known for its tolerance, diversity, locally-owned businesses and exciting night life. Hillcrest has one of the highest population density when compared to many other neighborhoods in San Diego. It also has the largest population of gay and lesbian residences.

The majority of streets in Hillcrest are lined with trees and beautiful scenery. The neighborhood is bound by Mission Hills to the northwest, Bankers Hill and Balboa Park to the south, University Heights to the north, and North Park to the east.
